My Story

As a young lawyer, I found that the adversarial and confrontational nature of practice was neither in tune with my personality nor my desire to work collaboratively to solve problems. Moving into financial services gave me an opportunity to play to my strengths as a listener, a teacher and a collaborator. My first stops in the financial services industry were with firms that earned commissions by selling products. Over time, the tension between providing objective advice versus subjective, commission-driven advice began to take a toll on my mental and physical well-being. One manifestation of the stress was severe neck and back pain. I was very close to leaving the profession entirely. Ironically and providentially, a health professional whom I had sought out for treatment introduced me to Spencer Sherman. Spencer introduced me to the model of fee-only financial advice, to the firm that is now Abacus, and to an objective, collaborative structure within which to help clients.

How I’m expanding what’s possible with money

I am using financial resources to assist a close family member suffering from chronic illness. I’m expanding the visibility of Abacus in Philadelphia and beyond with impact financial planning. I invest time and money to improve my community in the arts, culture, poverty, and education.

Outside of work, my passions include

I enjoy music by attending shows, exploring new recordings, and playing an instrument. I serve on several non-profit Boards, including a film organization and museum. One immediate goal is to travel more, domestically and internationally.
