Why I got into this profession
On my 5th birthday, with the candles glowing in front of me, I struggled to make a wish. One wish. As the seconds ticked on, the pressure grew and the yellow wax dripped onto the chocolate frosting. I thought, “I have to pick one thing?” I couldn’t decide.
Even worse than making a birthday wish was trying to answer the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” My mother’s wise but vague advice was to “follow your heart.” As a result, my indecisive but curious heart took me on a wild ride. I backpacked through Southeast Asia, meditated in India, and trekked through the Himalayas in Nepal trying to find myself. I returned home and developed art and cultural enrichment programs for schools determined to help the next generation become Global Citizens. I worked as an artist designing murals, creating drawings, and started my own business creating life-like paper flowers for weddings. I planned events, built websites, and bartended on the weekends. At one point, I had 5 jobs. Free-lance life was exciting and I developed a lot of skills, but the stress of money was weighing on me heavily.
Eventually, I was ready to exchange excitement for stability and finally follow my heart towards a “real job”. I didn’t know where a weirdo like me would ever fit in within a corporate structure. Coming from an arts background, working at a financial firm was not on my radar but after meeting with the Abacus team, I knew this was a place where all of my skills could come together to serve others.
My adventure goes on and now what I want to be when I grow up is someone who continues to follow her heart.
One thing I’m doing to help the planet
I volunteer as a mentor with a program called Forget Me Not Farm through the Sonoma Humane Society. My teen mentee and I work together to train and socialize rescue dogs to prepare them for adoption.
Outside of work, my passions include
Laughing is my favorite. I also love making art and really just making things in general. Whenever I go hiking, I am searching for natural objects to bring home and draw. I practice yoga regularly and on weekends you can find me playing in the ocean and sometimes catching waves. Singing while playing the ukulele always puts me in a good mood. I love my dog Yoda.
One goal I’m saving for
Wait, am I supposed to be saving? I better go talk to my financial advisor…
