At a silent auction to raise money for one of my favorite charities, I fixated on a piece of art. I loved it. At last, I would have some great art for the blank space in my new living room. As I played the game of silent auction leapfrog with two other bidders, I realized I was no longer the financial planner who offers advice on disciplined saving and spending. I had become the irrational
“got-to-have-it” shopper. Did I really have the money to give? Then, thankfully, I remembered that I had reviewed my annual charitable intentions two weeks prior and realized I had more to spend (every year I commit to giving a certain amount to charity). I would have zero buyer’s remorse! Despite spending nearly twice as much as my initial bid, I was happy about the difference I was making. Every time I see the art on my wall, I’m reminded of my generosity and where my dollars went, not on the amount I spent.
