At a local event that Abacus hosted in late 2013, an attendee confronted me rather aggressively about what it is that Abacus does to rate so high with B Corp, a nonprofit group that scores businesses on their social and environmental responsibility. I shared that we give 5% of profits to charity, have gender and ethnic diversity among our employees, and ensure that most of our investments aim for both social impact and financial returns. But she wasn’t feeling it.
The Abacus Generosity Initiative
One can’t blame her for being suspicious of a financial services firm’s integrity and intentions (thanks Bernie Madoff). But was she hoping that we would give our services away? Engage in more community service? Encourage more corporate volunteerism? I’m not sure, but we’re in.
I take great delight in announcing our new Abacus Generosity Initiative (AGI). It’s our commitment to expanding our impact in the communities in which we work:
So far, as part of AGI:
- Our L.A. staff spent a day sorting work clothes that will be worn by homeless people at job interviews that will help get them back to self-sufficiency.
- We bowled to raise money to prepare adults with disabilities for employment.
- We launched our first-ever pro bono financial planning service.
The next one, my personal fave, is coming in May.
Breaking Bones for Charity: Trampoline Dodgeball
At our “Breaking Bones for Charity” event, each team will be playing for a charity, and we will make a donation for each player who gets into the ring. An anonymous donor has graciously offered to give $1,000 to the “tournament” winner’s charity! We could certainly use a few more jumpers and cheerleaders, so click here if you’re in the L.A. area and can join in the fun to help us raise even more money for two of our favorite local charities: Heal the Bay and the Weingart Center for the Homeless.
The AGI will include educational events for the public and other opportunities for you to engage alongside us. And if you have a favorite charity that you feel deserves consideration for our $10,000 Abacus Charitable Grant 2014, please have them apply here by October 31.
Happy giving.
